Driving in Joliet as a New Driver
I-80 Reconstruction
The 16-mile I-80 Will County reconstruction project continues through Joliet between Ridge Road and U.S. 30.
As of June 2026, the project entered its most significant remaining phase, including:
Center Street interchange work
Chicago Street interchange reconstruction
Replacement of the Des Plaines River bridges
The main reconstruction is expected to continue through the end of 2028.
Current U.S. 6 Lane Restrictions
Beginning July 15, U.S. 6 between McDonough Street and east of Brandon Road was reduced from two lanes to one in both directions for construction of a new I-80 bridge pier over U.S. 6 and the Des Plaines River.
Those restrictions are expected through the end of 2026.
Chicago Street Interchange
The new I-80 interchange at Chicago Street, which carries U.S. 52 and Illinois 53, is under reconstruction.
Several ramps closed in April 2026 and are expected to remain closed until 2028.
This creates an unusually complex driving environment involving:
Detours
Temporary signals
Freight traffic
Lane shifts
Ramp closures
I-55/I-80 Ramp Changes
IDOT also changed several ramps at the I-55/I-80 interchange in July 2026 as bridge reconstruction continued. Some ramps remain closed or under temporary traffic patterns.
Downtown Construction
Joliet's current construction program also includes downtown street work and utility projects. The city maintains a dedicated construction-update page because closures change frequently.
