Driving in Freeport as a New Driver
Active Business U.S. 20 Construction
One of the strongest current topics for the Freeport page is the Business U.S. 20/Galena Avenue project.
IDOT announced that construction began August 24, 2026 between Park Boulevard and Clark Street.
Current 2026 work includes:
Pavement patching
Curb and gutter improvements
ADA sidewalk-ramp improvements
Milling, resurfacing, and traffic-signal improvements are scheduled for spring 2027. One lane in each direction is expected to remain open, and the $7.4 million project is scheduled to finish in July 2027.
New drivers should expect:
Slower traffic
Lane restrictions
Workers close to travel lanes
Changed pedestrian access
Temporary traffic controls
U.S. 20 Corridor West of Freeport
IDOT is also conducting a Phase I study on approximately 4.7 miles of U.S. 20 between Rees Road and west of Flansburg Road, between Lena and Freeport.
The corridor carries more than 8,000 vehicles per day. Phase I is expected to conclude in 2026, with Phase II planned for 2026-2028 and construction later.
This is a study. It should not be presented as active full-corridor construction.
2026 Freeport Street Program
Freeport approved nearly three miles of local street improvements for 2026, with an estimated $6.1 million in work.
The program includes:
Carroll Avenue
Demeter Drive
Dewey Street
Benton Avenue
Pershing Street
Stewart Avenue
Concord Drive
Gladewood Drive
Seminole Drive
Downtown Municipal Lot.
This gives the Freeport page substantially more local construction value than the county page.
Illinois Route 26 / West Avenue
IDOT's multi-year program includes future reconstruction planning for Illinois 26/West Avenue from north of Business U.S. 20 to south of Empire Street in Freeport, including engineering, land acquisition, utility work, and construction engineering.
This is programmed work rather than proof that full reconstruction is active now.
Freeport High School
Freeport High School is located at:
701 W. Moseley Street Freeport, IL 61032.
This gives West Moseley Street a clear school-driving role.
New drivers should expect:
Student vehicles
School buses
Parent traffic
Pedestrians
Homecoming and athletic-event traffic
The current school calendar includes a Homecoming Parade on October 7, 2026, an example of temporary event traffic that can affect streets around the school.
Downtown and County Government Traffic
Freeport is the Stephenson County seat. The county courthouse is at:
15 N. Galena Avenue Freeport, IL 61032.
That makes Galena Avenue important for both government and Business U.S. 20 traffic.
Drivers should expect:
Court visitors
Pedestrians
Parking activity
Business traffic
Construction
Drivers unfamiliar with downtown
Pecatonica River Conditions
The county baseline identifies Pecatonica River flooding as a local driving concern in Freeport.
After heavy rain or during high river stages:
Check current road conditions.
Never drive around barricades.
Avoid water of unknown depth.
Watch for fog and debris.
