U.S. Route 45 and Illinois Route 142
U.S. 45 is the main north-south route through the Eldorado area, while Illinois 142 provides an important regional connection through the city.
For a new driver, this intersection requires attention to:
Through traffic
Trucks
Turning vehicles
Local businesses
Rural-to-city speed changes
September 2026 U.S. 45 Sidewalk Project
IDOT has a September 18, 2026 letting for new sidewalk construction along U.S. 45 from Illinois 142 to the Tunnel Hill State Trail Extension parking lot in Eldorado. The contract specifies 70 working days.
This project is scheduled rather than completed as of August 29, 2026.

Construction vehicles
Workers near the roadway
Pedestrian detours
Temporary access changes
Illinois 142 Culvert Replacements
IDOT also has a September 18, 2026 letting for replacement of two box culverts on Illinois 142 approximately one mile and 2.1 miles southeast of U.S. 45 in Eldorado.

Longer Illinois 142 Improvements
IDOT's multi-year program includes approximately 4.2 miles of Illinois 142 overlay from U.S. 45 in Eldorado southeast, along with several culvert projects in the corridor.
This gives Eldorado more long-term road-project value than a generic small-city page.

IDOT's long-range U.S. 45 project begins at Illinois 142 in Eldorado and extends approximately nine miles toward Illinois 141 near the Gallatin/White county line. The proposal calls for widening much of the corridor from two lanes to four.
