Driving in Moline as a New Driver
I-74 and Mississippi River Bridge
I-74 is Moline's primary interstate and crosses the Mississippi River into Bettendorf.
The current bridge is a modern four-lane-per-direction crossing with a shared-use path. The replacement project also reconfigured local ramps and streets.
For new drivers:
Select the correct lane early.
Avoid abrupt changes near ramps.
Leave additional space around trucks.
Expect traffic to slow on bridge approaches.
Active I-74 and John Deere Road Construction
IDOT began a new $8.9 million project on August 24, 2026 at the I-74/John Deere Road interchange.
Current work covers:
I-74 from south of 27th Street to north of the Rock River
John Deere Road between 16th and 38th streets
The phase is expected to continue through November 30, 2026.
Initial work includes overnight lane closures, followed by daytime construction and temporary ramp closures.

Larger 2027 Interchange Reconstruction
The 2026 work prepares for a much larger reconstruction beginning in 2027.
Plans include:
Replacing the cloverleaf with a diverging-diamond interchange
Widening I-74
Reconstructing portions of John Deere Road
Replacing I-74 bridges over 38th Avenue
Adding shared-use paths.
Do not describe the diverging diamond as already open.
16th Street Viaduct Project
Moline's 16th Street Viaduct rehabilitation continued through 2026.
River Drive reopened June 12, while 4th Avenue and portions of 15th Street closed June 15 for the next construction phase. The work includes a new bridge deck, parapets, lighting, structural steel repairs, and decorative improvements.
The project is an important route to the Rock Island Arsenal.
Moline High School
Moline High School is located at:

The school states that many students walk, bike, carpool, or use MetroLINK because general-education transportation is not universally provided. It also specifically warns of congestion around school pickup and drop-off.
